Objective: Sexual instinct is one of the most significant aspects of human existence, which, if not properly guided, may lead to psychological and social harm. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a Qur’an- and Sunnah-based sexual education package on sexual self-restraint among male high school students in Tehran.
Method: The research employed a quasi-experimental design with pre-test/post-test and control group. The statistical population consisted of 10th- and 11th-grade male students in Tehran during the 2023–2024 academic year. Forty students were randomly selected and assigned to experimental and control groups. The experimental group received nine 90-minute sessions of sexual education based on Qur’anic and Prophetic teachings, along with two 100-minute sessions for parents, while the control group received no intervention. Data were collected using Esmaeili’s Sexual Self-Restraint Questionnaire (2015) and analyzed through multivariate covariance (MANCOVA) and one-way ANCOVA.
Results: Results indicated that the intervention significantly improved sexual self-restraint in the experimental group compared to the control group (p<0.001). Post-test mean scores in the experimental group were significantly higher in the cognitive (F=30.53, η²=0.57), emotional (F=29.11, η²=0.55), and behavioral (F=32.68, η²=0.58) dimensions. The findings suggest that the Qur’an- and Sunnah-based program had a strong effect in enhancing adolescents’ knowledge, attitudes, and behavioral control regarding sexual self-restraint.
Conclusion: The Qur’an- and Sunnah-based sexual education package effectively increased sexual self-restraint in high school boys and can serve as a practical intervention for promoting healthy sexual behaviors in adolescence. Integrating Islamic teachings with psychological insights provides a culturally grounded framework for parents, teachers, and counselors to nurture adolescents toward chastity, responsibility, and mental well-being.
