Neo-evolutionism is a revised version of Darwin's theory of the evolution of species, developed by some Western scientists in response to numerous criticisms of the original theory. This article adopts an analytical-descriptive approach to critically examine the neo-evolutionist perspective and its challenges and contradictions with the Qur'anic view on the origin of species, especially humans. The study finds that neo-evolutionism aligns with Darwin's theory in its premises and conclusions, differing only in its interpretation of the mechanism of species transformation. According to this view, changes occur suddenly rather than gradually, yet require extended periods to lead to the emergence of a new species.
Neo-evolutionists base their claims primarily on the observation of genetic mutations in certain animals and laboratory evidence. However, one of the empirical objections to this view is the low frequency of random mutations and the predominantly harmful nature of most mutations. Furthermore, among the three possible meanings of randomness in neo-evolutionist discourse, two face logical and philosophical objections.
Even if neo-evolutionism were proven, it fundamentally contradicts the Qur'anic account on two key claims: the "indeterminate origin of the first human" and the "emergence of humans through the accumulation and inheritance of mutated traits," both of which the Qur'an rejects. The core problem with the neo-evolutionist perspective lies in its lack of evidence to substantiate claims that conflict with the Qur'an. In contrast, the Qur'an, as the word of God, is supported by rational and transmitted proofs that ensure the credibility and accuracy of its assertions.
