The term al-Khashyah is a central concept in the Qur’anic ethical and epistemological framework, often mistakenly rendered as “fear.” However, al-Khashyah in the Qur’ān refers not to a reactive emotion, but to a volitional, cognitive, and sustained state rooted in the awareness of God’s majesty and presence. This article employs a semantic–educational approach to analyze al-Khashyah in its Qur’anic context, alongside its interpretation in the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), and its pedagogical and moral implications for contemporary Islamic education. Drawing on structural and cognitive semantics, as well as Islamic theories of moral development, the study examines the semantic field of al-Khashyah by comparing it with related and contrasting concepts such as Khawf (general fear), Wajl (trembling awe), Rahbah (dread), ʿIlm (knowledge), and Taqwā (piety). In the narrations of the Imams, al-Khashyah emerges as a spiritual force that links knowledge to action and cultivates self-restraint, humility, and accountability. The article argues that al-Khashyah can serve as an internal ethical mechanism capable of reinforcing moral discipline and social responsibility. It further explores the role of al-Khashyah in shaping educational practices, particularly in training youth to develop an inner moral compass. By offering a comprehensive analysis of al-Khashyah as a multidimensional Qur’anic concept, the study demonstrates its relevance for moral formation in today’s educational and social contexts and its potential to enrich Islamic pedagogy with deeper spiritual and cognitive dimensions.
