Abstract
The advancement of empirical sciences and the development of technology, with all the possibilities it provides for mankind, has made life more comfortable for man and easier for him to achieve his desires. These advances continue to accelerate ever more in the contemporary era. On the other hand, the Holy Qurʾān outlines a set of religious requirements for a Muslim to live by (in every age, till the end of the world) and it has a plan for the life of man in every time and place which may be summed up under the rubric ‘Qurʾānic lifestyle’. The confluence of these two phenomena can create opportunities and dangers that need to be managed with the insight and discernment of scholars and the learned.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of “advances in science” on the Qurʾānic lifestyle. Hence, after an overview, two sides of the coin of “scientific progress” have been considered separately and are presented under the headings “Opportunities” and “Dangers”. Opportunities include topics such as ‘keeping ties with near relatives’, ‘time management’, ‘virtual propagation’, ‘cyber maneuvering’, ‘essential skills for children in the modern age’, and ‘virtual assistance’, whereas for dangers the following topics: ‘prevalence of cyberbullying’, ‘waste of time and money’, ‘new forms of exaggeration and luxury’, and ‘population control’ have been cited. The result of this study is that the development of empirical sciences can be effective in promoting religious culture but can also play a negative role, and its effect and role depends on how the society is exposed to this phenomenon.
