Abstract
Qurʾānic education is the surest plan for the complete development of man, based on monotheism and submission to God Almighty, as it is based on human nature, volition, rationality and knowledge. To this end, some have attempted to interpret the Qurʾān from the perspective of education and training. The method of didactic exegesis is a deductive method based on the compilation of related verses, their categorization, classification, and the extraction of overarching rules with the intent of discovering the purpose and meanings of the verses. This can in turn lead to changes in the body, mind, spirit and behavior of a trainee. This type of exegesis has some potential pitfalls such as the exegete’s lack of qualification and his not adhering to the principles of exegesis which lead to a subjective interpretation. Some of the didactic exegeses are richer in their educational points, but they were not intended to be didactic exegeses, for example: al-Manār, Mehr, etc. while others were written as didactic exegeses such as ‘The First Didactic Exegesis’ by Hossein Mirzakhani, al-Tafsīr al-Tarbawī by Dr. Anwar Albāz, and Tafsīr al-Qurʾān al-Murattab: Manhajun lil-Yusr al-Tarbawī by Dr. Asʿad Ahmad Ali, all three of which have serious weaknesses such as a non-educational approach contrary to their titles, incomplete exegesis of the Qurʾān and so on. Some of the most famous didactic thematic exegeses available include: ‘Educational Thematic Exegesis’ by Dr. Alireza Arafi, ‘Interdisciplinary Thematic Exegesis of the Qurʾān and Science: The Qurʾān and Education’ by Dr. Rezaei Isfahani, Malāmiḥ al-Tafsīr al-Tarbawī lil-Qurʾān al-Karīm by Ibrahim ibn Saʿīd al-Dusarī, and al-Tafsīr al-Tarbawī lil-Qurʾān al-Karīm by Hashim Abū Khamsīn. We have sufficed, in the latter two commentaries, with introducing the exegetes briefly, but the first two thematic commentaries have been reviewed and their merits and shortfalls examined.
