Abstract

The family is the most fundamental social institution, and its dynamism and stability depend on the presence of healthy and enduring relationships between spouses. The Quran, using the expression mithāq ghalīẓ (a solemn and firm covenant), not only highlights the significance and elevated status of the marital bond but also underscores the obligations associated with such a sacred commitment. In Surah An-Nisa (4:21), while recalling the cherished memories of marital life, the Quran warns spouses to remain committed to this covenant. This study aims to emphasize the esteemed position of the marital bond, referred to as mithāq ghalīẓ, a sacred and elevated expression, in order to prevent the disintegration of the family unit. Using content analysis and a library-based research method, the study identifies fundamental principles such as spousal loyalty, respect for one’s partner, and righteous companionship (ma‘rūf), as essential ethical components of the mithāq ghalīẓ in marriage. Additionally, the study highlights moral obligations in divorce, including dignified separation, benevolence, and mutual consultation between spouses.
