A Systematic Explanation of the Principles of Intellectual Education in the Quranic Thought of Imam Khamenei

Abstract

Objective: This study aims to elucidate the systematic principles of intellectual education within the thought system of Imam Khamenei, grounded in the Holy Quran and prophetic narrations.
Method: Employing a descriptive‑analytical method and library‑based research, the study critically examines Imam Khamenei’s statements, Quranic verses, and authoritative hadith collections to derive prescriptive educational principles.
Findings: Intellectual education in this paradigm is not the mere transmission of knowledge, but a process of “bringing forth life and extracting the treasures of reason towards movement and action.” Five interconnected foundational principles were identified: (1) Facilitation – creating an environment that enables the learner’s free and conscious choice; (2) Empowerment of Reasoning – stirring the power of thought to restrain ignorance and convert doubt into certainty; (3) Strengthening Lesson‑Taking (ʿibra) – deriving lessons from divine laws to cultivate rational foresight and preventive piety; (4) Proof‑Centeredness in Cognition – transitioning from blind imitation to investigation and replacing imposition with rational persuasion; and (5) Alignment of Proof and Faith – integrating demonstrative knowledge with heartfelt belief to ensure both mental protection and dynamic, righteous action.
Conclusion: In this model, entrusting the “torch of reason” to the human being guarantees guidance towards ultimate perfection. By forging a deep bond between knowledge and practice, the system lays the foundation for attaining the goodly life (ḥayāt ṭayyiba), producing individuals who are both analytically rigorous and spiritually driven.
